Superman – The Clique (1969, dnc; this song became an "FM hit" when revived by R.E.M. in 1986.)

How Can I Be Sure – The Young Rascals (1967, #4; a cover version of this by David Cassidy peaked at #25 in 1972.) 

Son Of A Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield (1969; I just watched the movie "Pulp Fiction" and the soundtrack had a definite influence on this show!  Dusty was on it, as well as a Neil Diamond tune and The Statler Brothers, too... Coming up!)

Flowers On The Wall - The Statler Brothers (1966, #4; this was their only Top 40 hit, with over 66 hits on the BB C&W chart from 1965 to 1990).

Waterloo - Stonewall Jackson (1959, #4).

Omaha - Moby Grape (1967, #88; a quick plug for John Simon's show next week, featuring "geographical oldies"!)

She Cried - Jay & The Americans (1962, #5; the only hit by this NYC-based group to feature original lead singer John "Jay" Traynor, who was quickly replaced by David "Jay Black" Blatt.)

Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon & Holly Holy -  Neil Diamond (1967, #10, and 1969 #6; Neil is just one of those rare artists that has transcended generations for over 50 years!  In the late 60's and early 70's my parents were buying his albums while I was buying his singles, some of the most worn out 45's in the JR-kives!  Neil has announced that he has stopped touring due to Parkinson's Disease, but will still focus on making music at his home studio in Basalt, Colorado.  A true musical genius!




Mr. Businessman – Ray Stevens (1968, #28).

Surrender - Cheap Trick (1978, #62; the studio version of this failed to break the group on the pop chart, but a year later the "Live At Budokan" made them superstars.  Elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.)

Stop And Smell The Roses (45 version) – Mac Davis (1974, #9; before he became a singer, Mac was well known for his songwriting. Click here to see his songwriting credits).

45 Corner

 In the Corner tonight is the 45 version of "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" from Journey for the birthday of Steve Perry.  The 45 version runs 3:44, while the LP version runs 3:55, a rather curious edit to eliminate 11 seconds!  I've listened to both versions carefully, and I believe the edit comes towards the end during the "Na Na" chorus, which I also believe make this song so intriguing with all the vocal, guitar and keyboard overdubs, and still retains that great cold ending!

Don't Know Much - Linda Ronstadt with Aaron Neville (1989, #2; Aaron Neville had 2 BB Hot 100 #2 singles: the one above and the other "Tell It Like It Is" from 22 years earlier.)
Linda Ronstadt was an early supporter of WZ, recording his songs and naming her 1976 album after his song "Hasten Down The Wind"




While many teenagers had the famous Farrah Fawcett poster on their wall, I had this poster!  : )
