Birthday Calendar

A sad note this week: Dennis Edwards, who replaced David Ruffin in the Temptations, died on February 1st, just 2 days short of his 75th birthday.  We'll hear one of his first lead vocals coming up...

"St. Charles" - Jefferson Starship - BB Hot 100 #64, 1976. Written and sung by Marty Balin.

"Against All Odds" - Phil Collins - BB Hot 100 #1, 3 weeks, 1984.
Title song of the flick starring Jeff Bridges, James Woods and Rachel Ward.
I saw it in the theater; was more impressed with the song than the movie!

"Make Me Smile" - Chicago - BB Hot 100 #9, 1970.
Lead vocals by Terry Kath, who died in a tragic gun accident on 1/23/1978.

"Please Don't Go" - KC And The Sunshine Band - BB Hot 100 #1, 1 week, 1980.

The biggest hit of the Everly's career was written sung by Don.

"Super Freak" - Rick James - BB Hot 100 #16, 1981.
Rick shouts out to The Temptations to "Sing"! (they were the background vocalists).  Also used by M.C. Hammer for his song "U Can't Touch This" in 1990.

"Dear Eloise" - The Hollies - BB Hot 100 #50, 1968.
One of Graham Nash's last lead vocals before he departed to join those 2 California dudes.

"Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" - The Buckinghams - BB Hot 100 #5, 1967.
Originally penned as an instrumental by Joe Zawinul for his boss Cannonball Adderly, Johnny "Guitar " Watson added the lyrics, and it was taken into the Top 10 by this Chicago pop quintet.

"Brand New Key" - Melanie - BB Hot 100 #1, 3 weeks,1971.  Melanie Safka was not only a singer/songwriter, but a record executive, as this was released on her own label, Neighborhood Records.  And so cute, too...

"Nothing More To Lose" - Dave Davies - DNC
This song was taken from Dave's 1981 solo LP, AFL1-3603, which was the RCA Records catalog number!

On this date in 1959, a plane crash killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper).
Immortalized in song as "The Day The Music Died" by Don McLean's "American Pie".

8pm - 9pm Back to our Chart Date of 2/3/1979!

Soul Man - The Blues Brothers - BB Hot 100 #17.
The Blues Brothers (John Belushi and Dan Ayckroyd) were born out of a Saturday Night Live sketch, but their band featured "Soul Man" originals Steve Cropper on guitar and the late Duck Dunn on bass.

Blue Morning, Blue Day - Foreigner - BB Hot 100 #22.
Somewhere deep in the JRchives I have this blue vinyl single; couldn't find it for the show, but here's an image.
