OPENING THEME: Good Old Rock n’ Roll—Cat Mother and the All Night Newsboys (1969, #29, produced by Jimi Hendrix)
La Bamba Ritchie Valens 1959 #22
It takes a little grace to dance La Bamba. Carol Kaye played rhythm guitar and Rene Hall played lead guitar on this B-side to “Donna.”
S.O.S. Agnetha Fältskog (of ABBA) 1975
From her solo album roughly translated as “Eleven Women in One House.”
Gira, Gira (Reach Out I'll Be There) Four Tops
Literally, “turn turn.”
Volare (Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu) Domenico Modugno 1958 #1
Literally “in the blue painted in blue.”
En Häst Utan Namn (A Horse with No Name) Family Four 1972
A Swedish language cover of the song by America.
Je T'aime Brigitte Bardot with Serge Gainsbourg 1967
Gainsbourg originally recorded the song with Brigitte Bardot, with whom he was smitten, but she was married at the time and the record was not released. He subsequently (and infamously) recorded it with Jane Birkin.
Se Il Filo Spezzerai (You Keep Me Hangin' On) Supremes
Literally, “if you break the thread.”
Sukiyaki Kyu Sakamoto 1963 #1
Dominique The Singing Nun 1963 #1
Jeanine Deckers also adoped the name of Sister Luc Gabriel and was also known as The Smiling Sister, although in later life she had very little to smile about. She was deprived of the money she made for her Dominican order and her record label. She left the order and eventually died by her own hand in 1985
Spiel Ohne Grenzen (Games Without Frontiers) Peter Gabriel 1980
For a long time nobody knew that Kate Bush also sang on the track.
Antes De La Segunda Lagrima (Before the Next Teardrop Falls) Freddy Fender 1974 #1 H100 #1 CW
The record reached #1 on both the Hot 100 and the country chart.
*Come a Little Bit Closer Jay and the Americans 1963 #4
This Spanish language version was requested by Barbara.
*Por Primera Vez (For Once In My Life) Stevie Wonder
From the album “Motown Around the World.” Requested by Scottie with Love for Peggy
Piangi Con Me The Rokes 1966
The title means “cry with me.” The Grass Roots recorded an English language adaptation in 1967 called “Let’s Live for Today.”
Mein Girl (My Girl) The Temptations

This was the lead-off track from “Catch Bull at Four,” his only album to reach #1.

The single was released before the album “With Love, Bobby.”
Not Enough Love in the World Don Henley 1985 #34
From Henley’s second solo album “Building the Perfect Beast.”
Do I Love You Ronettes 1964 #34
Cash Box magazine described it as "a pulsating, big-sounding romancer...that the gals and the Jack Nitzsche-led instrumentalists wax with money-making enthusiasm.” Yep, that’s verbatim 1960’s music journalism.
Any Day Now Chuck Jackson 1962 #23 H100 #2 RB
This was Jackson’s highest charting single.
A Girl Like You Young Rascals 1967 #10
Dino Danelli’s drumming really drives the track through its many dynamic changes.
I’ve Got a Thing About You Baby Tony Joe White 1972 DNC
Tony Joe White did not make the charts with this song, but Elvis did when he covered it in 1974.
Angie Rolling Stones 1973 #1
This was the lead single from “Goats Head Soup.” Nicky Hopkins plays the piano part written by Keith Richards.
We lost two very influential musicians on the same day last week—Ozzie Osbourne and Chuck Mangione.
Shot in the Dark Ozzy Osbourne 1986 #68
Osbourne died at age 76 on Tuesday July 22. According to Ozzy’s New York Times obituary, he once wrote his own tongue in cheek epitaph: “Ozzy Osbourne, born 1948. Died, whenever. He bit the head off a bat.”
Give It All You Got Chuck Mangione 1980 #18
This track was played at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. Mangione died at age 84 also on Tuesday July 22.
