6-7pm

OPENING THEME:  Good Old Rock ‘n’ Roll – Cat Mother & the All-Night Newsboys (1969, #29, produced by Jimi
Hendrix.)

Wake Up Little Susie – The Everly Brothers (1957, #1, 4 weeks).

Baby, I Love You – Andy Kim (1969, #9; co-written by Phil Spector, the original version by The Ronettes peaked at #34 in 1964.)

Substitute – The Who (1966, dnc in U.S., #5 in the U.K.).

Niki Hoeky – P.J. Proby (1967, #23; an early writing effort from Pat and Lolly Vegas [Redbone], this was also covered by Elvis and Aretha Franklin whose versions dnc.)

Down In The Boondocks – Billy Joe Royal (1965, #9).

Georgy Girl – The Seekers (1967, #2; the theme to the movie of the same name starring Lynn Redgrave and James Mason.)

Desiree – The Left Banke (1968, #98; last charting entry for this NYC band.)

You Better Move On - Arthur Alexander (1962, #24; Arthur is the only American songwriter to be covered by The Beatles ["Anna"], The Rolling Stones ["You Better Move On"], and Bob Dylan ["Sally Sue Brown'].)

Kicks - Paul Revere And The Raiders featuring Mark Lindsay (1968, #4).

96 Tears - Garland Jeffreys (1981, 1966; another cool cover of this 60's "garage-rock" classic.)

Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show - Neil Diamond (1969, #22).

Goin' Back - The Byrds (1967, #89; the combination of Goffin/King songwriters and the heavenly harmonies of The Byrds should have made this a bigger hit. Too bad.)

Who Will Answer - Ed Ames (1968, #19).

Mohair Sam - Charlie Rich (1965, #21; Charlie scattered Hot 100 through the 60's, until he became "The Silver Fox" and was a 70's hit machine on both the pop and country charts.)

Good Year For The Roses - George Jones (1970, #2 C&W; Elvis Costello covered this on his 1981 album Almost Blue.)

Don't Worry - Marty Robbins (1961, #3, #1 C&W; the fuzz bass on this song, played by Nashville session ace Grady Martin, was quite radical for country music at the time, but it's the hook that makes me never tire of hearing this song.)

Great Balls Of Fire – Jerry Lee Lewis (1958, #2).

You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet - Bachman-Turner Overdrive (45 version, 1974, #1, 1 week; the "Bachman" in this Canadian band was ex-Guess Who guitarist Randy Bachman.  But who was the "Turner"?  See the answer at the end of the Blog.)

Time for a little Rockin' Remnants Trivia!  We're giving away a gift card to Papa John's and a pair of tickets to Cinemapolis!  It was an Audio Clue, and Steve from Ithaca identified the intro of "Put Out The Light" by Joe Cocker.  We'll play the 45 version coming up in just a bit...

Juke Box Music – The Kinks (1977, dnc).

Put Out The Light - Joe Cocker (45 version,1974, #46; I said during the first part of the show that 45 versions could differ from LP versions in many ways, and they were usually shorter to accommodate AM radio.  Some of the ways were a quick fade of the LP version, an edit of the LP version, extra overdubs like vocals, strings, horns, guitar, piano. etc. This 45 version is 50" shorter than the LP version, and has a slightly different horn line in the fade out.  There's a lot of information online about the differences in the 7" single.)

8pm - 9pm

A Cowboy's Work Is Never Done - Sonny & Cher (1972, #8; this 45 version has a guitar overdub on the second verse that is not on the LP version.  After 46 years, I just discovered this last week!  Always cool to find out new facts about the old.

Love Reign O'er Me - The Who (1973, #76; from the LP Quadrophenia, this 45 version has several edits, and a different ending than the LP version).

Questions 67 & 68 - Chicago (1969, #71; from Chicago's debut LP, this long version was their first Hot 100 chart song, although it stalled out after just 3 weeks on the chart.  Two years later and edited down to just over 3 minutes, it climbed into the Top 40 and peaked at #24.)

Virginia (Touch Me Like You Do) - Bill Amesbury (1974, #59; this 45 started off one of the behemoth labels of the 1970's, Casablanca Records, although by decade's end the label had no singer-songwriters, but rather disco acts like Donna Summer, The Village People, Funkadelic, and everyone's favorite comic book rock band, Kiss.  It's quite a story of 70's record label excesses, and if you click on the yellow highlight above you can read all about it!)

Carry That Weight/Golden Slumbers - Trash (1969, Bubbling Under #112; this Scottish band was, oddly enough, signed to Apple Records.  The Beatles never released this medley as a single.)

I'll Drink To You - Duke Jupiter (1982, #58; straight out of Rochester, NY, this band was a local favorite, but never hit it big on the national charts.)

Rubber Bullets - 10cc (1973, #73; the debut single from the British art-rock band had the line "We all got balls and brains. But some got balls and chains", edited out, deemed to risque for the general 45-buying public.)
