In our Remnants spotlight this week is the first week of Summer, 1970, and a classic Billboard Hot 100 chart: we'll
hear from The Beatles, The J5, Joe Cocker, Three Dog Night, Freda Payne and more! The Birthday Calendar this week is loaded! And we're ready to pay tribute to Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Ray Davies, Sir Brian Wilson (well, not really, but if he was British...), plus more! It's also the first Remnants of Summer 2017, and we'll break into the archives for those great summer oldies...
6pm - 7pm
The Long And Winding Road/For You Blue - The Beatles - Hot 100 #1, 2 weeks - The 20th and last chart-topper for The Beatles, with Paul on the "A-side" and George on the flip.
The Love You Save - The Jackson 5 - BB Hot 100 #2 - This would ascend to #1 for 2 weeks on 6/27/1970.
Which Way You Goin', Billy - The Poppy Family - BB Hot 100 #3 - Terry Jacks, and his wife Susan were this Canadian group.
Back to our chart date shortly, but right now...
Summertime, Summertime, Summertime - The Jamies, 1958 - A special Remnants re-mix courtesy of JS and his buddy Alan!
Out In The Sun (Hey-O) - The Beach-Nuts, 1965 - This studio group were actually The Strangeloves and The Angels! This is a great-sounding song evoking summer and the beach, but only Bubbled Under at #106.
Hot Fun In The Summertime - Sly & The Family Stone, 1969 - This summertime classic peaked at #2, October 25th, 1969!
See You In September - The Tempos, 1959
The Door Into Summer - The Monkees, 1967 - While scanning for Summer songs on the WWW, I found this nugget featuring Mike Nesmith on lead vocals!
45 Corner
Mama Told Me (Not To Come) - Three Dog Night - BB Hot 100 #50
The Letter - Joe Cocker - BB Hot 100 #8
Back to our Chart Date with the single versions of these two Top 10 charters, and these version are only available on 7" vinyl! Despite their chart prowess in the 70's, this was Three Dog Night's only picture sleeve! The Joe Cocker 45 version is live, but not the same live version as on the "Mad Dogs And Englishmen" LP.
Ball Of Confusion (That's What The World Is Today) - The Temptations - BB Hot 100 #6
Get Ready - Rare Earth - BB Hot 100 #4 - The Tempts did the original version back in '66, and the Rare Earth version bested it by 25 spots on the chart.
7pm - 8pm

June 22nd - Kris Kristofferson - 81

Howard Kaylan (lead singer, Turtles) - 70
Todd Rundgren - 69
June 24th - Mick Fleetwood - 75
Bruce Johnston (Beach Boys) - 73
Jeff Beck - 73
Penny Lane - The Beatles, 1967
A World Without Love - Peter And Gordon, 1964 - Peter Asher and Gordon Waller were part of the 1st British Invasion and took this Lennon/McCartney-penned song to the top of the Hot 100 on June 27th. It helped that McCartney was dating Asher's sister Jane at the time! He later became a record producer (James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt) and record executive for a 2nd career (he's the bloke on the left on the picture sleeve).
Heroes And Villains - The Beach Boys, 1967 - From the legendary "Smile" LP, the great lost album of the 60's which was finally released in 2011 by Capitol Records after years of rumors and speculation. Read about it here!
Caroline, No - Brian Wilson, 1966 - This was on the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" LP, but released as Brian Wilson's first solo single. We'll hear another BW solo single later in the program.
Disney Girls (1957) - The Beach Boys, 1971 - Happy Birthday on June 24th to erstwhile Beach Boy Bruce Johnston, who penned this cool tune from the LP "Surf's Up". Bruce's most well known composition is "I Write The Songs", a #1 hit for Barry Manilow in 1975!
Like To Get To Know You - Spanky And Our Gang, 1968 - The last Top 40 hit (#17) for this Chicago-area psychedelic outfit.
Dedicated Follower Of Fashion - The Kinks, 1966 - It's hard to do justice to the songwriting output of Ray Davies with one song, so we'll hear more Kinks in the 70's Happy Hour!
Little Green Apples - O.C. Smith, 1968 - This song off the pen of Bobby Russell won a Grammy for Song of the Year and Country Song of the Year. O.C. died in 2001, age 69.
She'd Rather Be With Me - The Turtles, 1967 - Singers Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman later formed the comic-rock duo Flo and Eddie, who also released LP's and toured with Frank Zappa in the 70's.
Open My Eyes - Nazz, 1968 - Todd Rundgren's first band opened with this fuzz-guitar classic, which peaked at Bubbling Under #112.
Hi Ho Silver Lining - Jeff Beck, 1967 - The first solo single from guitar legend Beck peaked at Bubbling Under #123. It's probably wise that he sought out a young Rod Stewart to front his Jeff Beck Group in 1968. Did Jimmy Page ever sing vocals for Led Zeppelin?
CLOSING THEME: Sleepwalk – Santo & Johnny (1959, #1 for two weeks)
Host This Week (July 1st): JS with a spotlight.
