Date: November 26, 2016
Host: John Simon
Feature: Late November 1967
Every once in a while the show falls on my birthday. This is one of those times. Here's what I posted on Facebook. For the record....I had a blast!
Tonight's birthday treat: three hours of Rockin' Remnants on wvbr.com (93.5 locally). Pop radio in 1967 blew me away (I was just turning 14 on this date), and it still has a hold on my heart. Here's this week's WABC Super Hit survey (with a picture of Ron Lundy, who was my very favorite radio voice back then). "Hel-lo, luv!" C'mon by!
Birthday Calendar

– Duane Allman – born in 1946

November 25 – Percy Sledge – born in 1940

6-7pm
OPENING THEME: Good Old Rock ‘n’ Roll – Cat Mother & the All-Night Newsboys (1969, #29, produced by Jimi Hendrix)
(The Lights Went Out In) Massachusetts - Bee Gees (at #20 this week, headed to #11 - this was their fourth hit single released within six months. Amazing!)
Bend Me, Shape Me - American Breed (debuting at #73, headed to #5)
Since You Showed Me How To Be Happy - Jackie Wilson (at #58, headed to #32 Pop, #22 R&B - recorded by the same crew who played on Higher & Higher: a bunch of the moonlighting "Funk Brothers," Motown's studio band)
She Is Still A Mystery - Lovin' Spoonful (at #41, down from a peak of #27 - John Sebastian's last great gasp with the group before he branched out for a solo career)
Cross My Heart - Billy Stewart (at #99 this week, headed to #86 Pop and #34 R&B - combining some of the elements of Sitting In The Park and I Do Love You - a lost treasure!)
* Johnny Angel - Shelley Fabares (4/62; #1 for two weeks - a dedication "to the DJ" from Barbara in Danby. Aw shucks!)
* 59th Street Bridge Song - Simon & Garfunkel (4/67; dnc - the b-side of "Feelin' Groovy," going out to Judy on the West End)
* Sugar (Candy Shoppe) - The Brady Bunch (1973; dnc - Florence Henderson, the mom on the Brady Bunch show, passed away yesterday. John-the-Drummer requested "something fitting." Voila!)
* Still The One - Orleans (7/76; #5 - a dedication from "Glen in Watkins Glen" to his wife Sarah on the occasion of their wedding anniversary. Congrats!)
* You're The One - Vogues (9/65; #4 - another dedication to the DJ - this one from Woody in Danby. Thanks, man!)
* In My Room - Beach Boys (11/63; #23 - Lee from Groton requested this one. The BBs released it as the b-side of Be True To Your School. What were they thinking??!?)
45 Corner: Rosie - Chubby Checker (6/64; #116 - this b-side of "Lazy Elsie Molly" goes out to the DJ's daughter Rosie.)
* I'm the Girl From Wolverton Mountain - Jo Ann Campbell (8/62; #38 - the answer record to Claude King's Wolverton Mountain, which spent nine weeks at #1 on the C&W chart, was requested by long-time listener Michael O)
Sukiyaki - Kyu Sakamoto (6/63; #1 for three weeks - the only U.S. #1 sung in Japanese!)
* The Way You Look Tonight - Lettermen (9/61; #13 - their first charting single goes out as a dedication to Lynne from....the DJ)
Soul Man - Sam & Dave (at #2 this week and #1 R&B - the "house band" at Stax Records was Booker T & The M.G.s. Bass player Donald 'Duck' Dunn played on a lot of big records. This may have been the biggest!)
It Takes Two - Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston (1/67; #14 Pop, #4 R&B - this was Kim Weston's highest-charting single. Unfortunately - for her - Marvin's next duet single was with Tammi Terrell. The rest is history.)
* Please Be With Me - Cowboy (1971 - from the album "5'll Getcha Ten," with studio player Duane Allman on slide guitar. Going out to Julianna in Vermont.)
Revival (Love Is Everywhere) - Allman Brothers Band (1/71; #92 - their first charting single has become something of a staple on Classic Rock radio)
I Can't Hear You - Betty Everett (6/64; #66 - "Movin' R&B oriented tune sung with determination and drive. Betty is surrounded by male chorus and much brass." - Billboard Magazine, June 1964)
Dreams - Fleetwood Mac (4/77; #1 - a big hit here in the States. It only reached #24 in the U.K. John McVie was a founding member of the band, and is the "Mac" in the title.)
What's Your Name - Don & Juan (10/62; #7 - a last-gasp of the Doo-Wop revival, coming to you on the Big Top Records label)
A Little Rain Must Fall - The Epic Splendor (11/67; bubbling under, headed to #87)
Nobody But Me - Human Beinz (at #102 this week - for its second week - but headed to #8 - a kick-ass cover of the Isley Brothers tune; some think it's better than the original)
* Things We Said Today - The Beatles (7/64; dnc - the Beatles had six songs chart as singles from the "A Hard Day's Night" soundtrack. This probably would've made it seven, but they never released it as a single. Going out to Terry & Barbara, who saw Paul McCartney in concert just two months ago)
* Little Darlin' - The Diamonds (3/57; #2 for eight weeks! - must've gotten stuck behind Elvis. Bad break.... Listener Don-from-Oklahoma wanted "something from 1958." I tried.)
Can I Change My Mind - Tyrone Davis (12/68; #5 Pop, #1 R&B for three weeks - great record!)
Hang 'Em High - Booker T & The M.G.s (11/68; #9 - this one opens with Donald "Duck" Dunn's bass line and Al Jackson's hi-hat.)
Snoopy's Christmas - Royal Guardsmen (12/67; #5 on the Billboard Christmas Chart - this one also reached the Top Ten on WABC's Superhit Survey in New York City. It's two days past Thanksgiving and the gloves are off: Happy Holiday Season!)
WABC in New York City updated its weekly Superhit Survey every Tuesday evening. Tonight we count down the Top Ten on this date in 1967.
#10 - I Heard It Through the Grapevine - Gladys Knight & The Pips (headed to #3 on WABC - and #2 Billboard, and #1 R&B for six weeks. This was Motown's biggest record to date. A year later it would be eclipsed by another version....)
#9 - Keep The Ball Rolling - Jay & Techniques (headed to #5 on WABC - but only #14 on Billboard)
#8 - Please Love Me Forever - Bobby Vinton (headed to #6 on WABC - and #6 Billboard. Tommy Edwards charted with this song in 1958)
#7 - Expressway To Your Heart - Soul Survivors (down from #1 on WABC - and #4 Billboard, and #3 R&B. This was Gamble & Huff's first big successful production, and would pave the way for their Philadelphia International Records empire)
#6 - Soul Man - Sam & Dave (down from #3 on WABC - and #2 Billboard, and #1 R&B for seven weeks. Yes, we DID play this at 7 p.m. Back in the day they'd play the biggest hits every hour. This was a b-i-g hit!).
#5 - It Must Be Him - Vicki Carr (peaking at #5 on WABC - and #3 Billboard. This song was played a lot in the film Moonstruck. "Cosmo, you're gonna die.")
#4 - To Sir With Love - Lulu (down from #1 on WABC - and #1 Billboard for four weeks. In fact, this was WABC's Record Of The Year.)
#3 - Daydream Believer - Monkees (headed to #1 on WABC - and #1 Billboard for four weeks)
#2 - Incense and Peppermints - Strawberry Alarm Clock (down from #1 on WABC - and #1 Billboard, too. One of the great debut singles of the era)
#1 - The Rain, The Park and Other Things - Cowsills (peaking at #1 on WABC for just this week - and topping out at #2 on Billboard for two weeks. This family group was the prototype for television's Partridge Family.)
Susan - Buckinghams (bubbling under this week, headed to #11 - Columbia released this single with a crazy psychedelic interlude. I've created a special edit for tonight's show with an extended ending. Happy birthday to me!)
* Ball of Confusion - Temptations (5/70; #3 for three weeks - a political dance record that still sounds relevant today)
* Like An Old-Time Movie - Scott McKenzie (peaking tonight at #24 - going out to the Chipster, who loves to throw a good curveball....)
Goodnight My Love - Ben E. King (1/66; #91 - my favorite version of this old chestnut. Goodnight everybody. Thanks for stopping in!)
