Tonight it's the summer of 1975, and a year that had some great sounds blasting out of the AM radios all over the country! We've got the sounds of 70's stalwarts like The Bee Gees, Wings, Earth, Wind & Fire, Elton John, Olivia Newton-John, War, and many more! We'll check in with the Birthday Calendar at 7:00, in the 45 Corner the 7" vinyl version of The Eagles "One Of These Nights" on Asylum Records, not available on LP or CD; another Rockin' Remnants exclusive! Also for summer, a giveaway from Atlas Bowl in T-burg for one hour of free bowling! Great stuff on a Saturday Night..
6pm – 7pm
Jive Talkin' – Bee Gees – BB Hot 100 #3,
-This would ascend to the top of the Hot 100 for 2 weeks on August 9th
The Hustle – Van McCoy/The Soul City Symphony – BB Hot 100 #5
-Tumbling down from #1 on July 26th, where it spent 1 week
Please Mr. Please – Olivia Newton-John – BB Hot
100 #4
Someone Saved My Life Tonight - Elton John - BB Hot
100 #6
-Mid-70's release from Elton which did not peak at #1, just #4...
Midnight Blue - Melissa Manchester – BB Hot 100 #7
-The debut single for Ms. Manchester peaked at Hot 100
#6 and Adult Contemp chart #1
Listen To What The Man Said – Wings – BB Hot 100 #8
-Paul McCartney had many monikers on his single
releases in the 70's and 80's; this was the most simplistic
Why Can't We Be Friends – War – BB Hot 100 #12
I'm On Fire - Dwight Twilley Band – BB Hot 100 #16
-Dwight's other Top 40 hit, "Girls", from 1980 also peaked at
Hot 100 #16
-Headed to the top of the Hot 100 on August 23rd for 1 week
45 Corner
One Of These Nights – The Eagles – BB Hot 100 #1, 1
week
-This was on top of the Hot 100 this week 31 years ago.
The Asylum Records single ran 3:42, while the LP
version was 4:51, still a little long for those
conservative AM stations! Many Eagles 45 masters
were lost, burned in a warehouse fire, taped over or
tied up in licensing issues (depending what story you
believe), so it's unlikely there will be an Eagles 45
anthology, but ya never know...

Ballroom Blitz – Sweet – BB Hot 100 #33
Third Rate Romance - Amazing Rhythm Aces - BB
Hot 100 #34
-This band from Knoxville scored big with their first Hot
100 release, peaking at #14, but that was it. They
did however have more success on the country chart and
folk and roots circuit.
7pm - 8pm
Birthday Calendar
August 1st – Jerry Garcia, 1942
August 2nd – Garth Hudson (The Band), 74
Andrew Gold, 1951
August 5th – Rick Derringer, 69
"Sugaree" - Jerry Garcia, 1972
-This was Jerry's only charting 45, 2 weeks on the Hot 100, peaking at #94. Bummer, man...
"Chest Fever" - The Band, 1968
-One fantastic organ riff! If you really wanna hear Garth Hudson workout, check out the live version of this song from the Live At Watkins Glen LP.
"Lonely Boy" - Andrew Gold, 1977
-Side note: Andrew's mother, Marni Nixon, passed away on July 24th. She was the uncredited vocalist for many Hollywood classics, including "The King And I", "West Side Story", "My Fair Lady", and many others.
"Who Can I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me)" - Tony Bennett, 1964
-A true American classic, at 90 Tony is still on tour with (of all people) Lady Gaga! They also have an album out.
"Hang On Sloopy" - Rick Derringer, 1975
-10 years after the McCoys version hit #1, Rick remade the song with a kind of "tropical islands" feel. Didn't help as this version peaked at Hot 100 #94.
"Rip Van Winkle" - The Devotions, 1964
-Congratulations to Ben, who heard the bowling sound effect at the beginning of this wacky tune, and called in to win an hour of free bowling at Atlas Bowl in T-burg!
"Ain't That A Shame" - Fats Domino, 1955
-The version we played is referred to as the "choir" version because of the inclusion of female background vocalists not found of the original 45 or LP version. I found it on the original pressing of the "American Graffiti" vinyl LP.
The next 5 songs are all mono, single versions. It's kind of cool to hear the "punchy" AM mixes, which differed from their stereo LP counterparts.
"Son Of A Preacher Man" - Dusty Springfield, 1967
"Baby I Need Your Lovin' " - Johnny Rivers, 1967
"Itchycoo Park" - Small Faces, 1968
"Can't Find The Time" - Orpheus, 1968
"You've Got Your Troubles" - The Fortunes, 1965
-This version, which fades out instead of ending cold, is only available on the original 45.
8pm - 9pm
Back to our chart date of 8/6/1975, but first...
"Kind Of A Drag" - The Buckinghams, 1967
"Can't Get Used To Losing You" - Andy Williams, 1963
-Off the pen of the legendary songwriting team of Pomus/
Shuman
Rendezvous - The Hudson Brothers - BB Hot 100 #38
- Mark, Brett and Bill had a summer TV show in 1974,
Wildfire - Michael Murphey - BB Hot 100 #53
When Will I Be Loved - Linda Ronstadt - BB Hot 100 #62
- This Everly Bros. cover peaked at Hot 100 #2, 6 places higher than the original.
Daisy Jane - America - BB Hot 100 #55
That's The Way Of The World - EWF - BB Hot 100 #31
-The title track of a movie that nobody I know, including myself, has ever seen. We played the 45 short version, which is available on CD and download.
It Only Takes A Minute - Tavares - BB Hot 100 #72
Sweet Maxine - Doobie Brothers - BB Hot 100 #77
- debuting this week on the Hot 100, it would peak at #40
Mamacita - The Grass Roots - BB Hot 100 #97
- Written by Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil, this song created some controversy for the line "She's so sweet you could eat her". Pulled off many AM playlists, the 45 was re-released with the cleaned up line "She's so sweet, there ain't nobody sweeter". Too late. The record stiffed at #71, and was the last appearance of The Grass Roots on the Hot 100.
"Funky Nassau - Pt. One" - The Beginning Of The End, 1971
"Loving Arms" - Dobie Gray, 1973
-The follow-up to "Drift Away", this only reached Hot 100 #61.
"Clouds" - David Gates, 1973
-His first post-Bread single had a similar "soft-rock" sound, but not the chart power, peaking at #47.
"We Don't Talk Anymore" - Cliff Richard, 1980
"Nightshift" - The Commodores, 1985
CLOSING THEME: Sleepwalk – Santo & Johnny (1959, #1 for two weeks)
Host Next Week (Aug 13): John Simon
