Knock On Wood - Amii Stewart

Image result for amii stewart - knock on wood 45Image result for amii stewart - knock on wood 45

#1 on the Hot 100 in April 1979, this was

also #1 on the dance floors back 37 years

ago.  The most often heard versions were

the longer LP or 12" remix.  This 45

version is about half that time, and while a

short version is available on CD, it is not

the original 45 version.  This was Amii's

only Top 40 hit.

Sultans Of Swing - Dire Straits - BB Hot

100 #10

An astute listener remembered Dire Straits

debut single on the radio back in '79; this

peaked at Hot 100 #4.

7pm - 8pm

"Ride The Tiger" - Jefferson Starship, 1974

The recently departed Paul Kantner was not

a lead vocalist or lead guitarist, but he was

the "glue" that kept the various incarnations

of this band together.  Here is a great track

from the LP Dragonfly featuring Kantner on

lead vocals.

"Handy Man" - James Taylor, 1977

"Stagger Lee" - Lloyd Price, 1959

One of the early stars of Rock and Roll, this

single was #1 for 4 weeks on the Hot 100;

Lloyd was inducted into the Rock and Roll

HOF in 1998.

"Hungry" - Paul Revere & The Raiders

featuring Mark Lindsay, 1966

An excellent track from Pink Floyd guitar

man Gilmour's first solo LP.

"I Do" - J. Geils Band, 1977

A live version of this Marvelows cover peaked

at Hot 100 #24 in 1983.

"Pleasant Valley Sunday" - Monkees, 1967

Gerry Goffin and Carole King wrote this as a

"tribute" to their mentor, Don Kirshner, who

lived in the suburbs of New Jersey.

"Take It To The Limit" (45 version) - Eagles,
1976

The only Eagles A-side to feature Randy

Meisner on lead vocals peaked at Hot 100

#4.

"Have I The Right" - The Honeycombs, 1965

The only U.S. Top 40 hit for this British combo

not to be confused with the soul trio The

Honey Cone.

Barbarians, 1965

An interesting song from an interesting

Boston-based band.  Click here to learn more.

"Killer Joe" - The Rocky Fellers, 1963

 Newton Brothers, 1963

Image result for danke schoen wayne newton 45Image result for danke schoen wayne newton 45

This Bert Kaempfert instrumental (with lyrics

added) was originally brought to Bobby Darin

at Capitol Records.  Darin liked it, but thought

it was out of his vocal range, so he offered it

to a young singer recently signed to the label,

Wayne Newton.  Darin produced the record,

and the rest is history...

"Chained And Bound" - Otis Redding, 1964

Back to our spotlight date of 3/12/1979

"Crazy Love" - Poco - BB Hot 100 #23

"Blue Morning, Blue Day" - Foreigner -

BB Hot 100 #27

#50

The b-side of the single "Promises", this

peaked at Hot 100 #40; the a-side peaked

at #9.

"Roxanne" - The Police - BB Hot 100 #65

The first single from this British trio made

its U.S. chart debut on 2/10/1979; it would

peak at #32.

More sounds of the 70's

"Baker Street" - Gerry Rafferty, 1978

"Time Passages" - Al Stewart, 1978

As we close out the show for this week, we

pay homage to keyboard wiz Keith Emerson,

who died on March 10th.  Keith was a big fan

of Aaron Copland and ELP covered 2 of his

compositions, a crazy rendition of "Fanfare

For The Common Man" and this:

"Hoedown" - From the LP Trilogy, 1972
