Rock ‘n’ Roll Trivia

Many people have covered Marvin Gaye hits over the years, but only a few have had chart success with them. Can you name two charting covers of Marvin Gaye songs?

(scroll down to find the answer below the playlist)

Playlist

[songs in bold are from the spotlight date of DATE; yellow song titles are YouTube links; songs with * were requests; all chart information comes from the Billboard Top 100 (for chart dates before/during July 1958) or Billboard Hot 100 (for chart dates during/after Aug 1958) unless otherwise noted]

6-7pm

OPENING THEME:  Good Old Rock ‘n’ Roll – Cat Mother & the All-Night Newsboys (1969, #29, produced by Jimi Hendrix)

#10 – You're The One - The Vogues (down from a peak of #4, this was a cover of a British hit for co-writer Petula Clark)

#9 - Taste Of Honey - Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass (down from two weeks at #7. This record actually spent six weeks in the Top Ten!)

#8 - Ain't That Peculiar - Marvin Gaye (peaking in its first of three weeks at #8 on the Pop chart, but it would also reach #1 on the R&B chart)

#7 - A Lover's Concerto - The Toys (this one recently spent three weeks at #2, shut out by The Beatles' Yesterday)

#6 - Turn! Turn! Turn! - The Byrds (two weeks from now this record would reach #1 and stay there all the way to Christmas. The line "A time for peace, I swear it's not too late" is particularly poignant tonight in the wake of last night's mass shootings and bombings in Paris....)

#5 - Let's Hang On - 4 Seasons (headed to a peak of #3. Tonight we hear a special mix created exclusively for Rockin' Remnants by our friends at Hiltronex Sound in Ithaca.)

#4 - Rescue Me - Fontella Bass (peaking at #4 Pop, but headed for a four-week run at the top of the R&B chart)

#3 - Get Off My Cloud - Rolling Stones (this one just finished a two week run at #1)

#2 - 1-2-3 - Len Barry (peaking on this date at #2. Len Barry had recently left the Dovell's for a solo career. So far, so good!)

#1 - I Hear A Symphony - The Supremes (their sixth #1 record, although their previous charter had stalled at #11. They'd be back a few records later with another four consecutive #1s.)

* Light My Fire - The Doors (6/67; #1 - the chart debut for this LA band, going out to our friend Judy whose birthday was coming the next day)

45 Corner:  If You Can't Say Something Nice - Roy Orbison (this is the b-side of Roy's Crawling Back, a record at #70 this week and headed to a peak of #46. He had recently switched record labels, but the hits were starting to dry up.)

If You Could Read My Mind - Gordon Lightfoot (12/70; #5 - Gordon Lightfoot had released a string of records above the border, but this was his first chart hit in the States. Tonight he plays to a packed house at Ithaca's State Theatre. This goes out to everybody headed into town for the big show)

* Eve Of Destruction - Barry McGuire (this record had reached #1 back in the end of September. Two requests came in for it in light of the recent violence in France and Africa and the Middle East, not to mention here at home. Coincidentally, songwriter PF Sloan would pass away one day after this broadcast.)

7-8pm

Try A Little Tenderness - Otis Redding (12/66; #25 Pop, #4 R&B - part of Otis' chart success is attributable to the Stax Records studio band: none other than Booker T & The MGs. Booker T's organ licks in this song are especially tasty. Happy birthday, Mr. Jones.)

Your Baby Doesn't Love You Any More - Ruby & The Romantics (6/65; #108 - this band churned out consistently classy singles. Inexplicably, each one charted a bit lower than its predecessor. This one didn't even reach the Hot 100.)

3,000 Miles - Brian Hyland (4/66; #99 - this is another fine single that barely scraped onto the chart.)

Sugar Mountain - Neil Young (11/68 - this live performance was recorded in Toronto and appeared not once, but FOUR times as a b-side on Neil Young singles: Oh Lonesome Me, Cinnamon Girl, When You Dance, and the #1 Heart Of Gold.)

Stayed Too Long At The Fair - Bonnie Raitt (12/72; dnc - released as a single, but it never went anywhere. A classic slice of Bonnie Raitt from her album Give It Up.)

* I Feel Fine - The Beatles (12/65 - the final #1 of the year, going out by request to young Marnie on the West Hill.)

It's My Life - Animals

Never Had It So Good - Ronnie Milsap

* What's Going On - Marvin Gaye

Cleo's Back - Junior Walker & The All-Stars

Make Me Your Baby - Barbara Lewis

Ain't That Peculiar - Fanny

8-9pm

Make It Easy On Yourself - Walker Brothers

Take A Look - Irma Thomas

My Girl Has Gone - Miracles

* The Cheater - Bob Kuban

Yesterday - The Beatles

You've Got To Hide Your Love Away - The Silkie

From The Beginning - Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Sunlight - Jesse Colin Young

Love Is Blue - Paul Mauriat

Get Together - Youngbloods

(If You're Ready) Come Go With Me - Staple Singers

45 Corner:  What Am I Crying For - Dennis Yost & Classics IV

* Elected - Alice Cooper

Wonderin' Where The Lions Are - Bruce Cockburn

 * REQUESTED SONG TITLE – ARTIST (INFO)

CLOSING THEME:  Sleepwalk – Santo & Johnny (1959, #1 for two weeks)

Trivia Answer

In order of chart success, here are three charting covers of Marvin Gaye hits:

How Sweet It Is - James Taylor (6/75; #5); Junior Walker (7/66; #18)
Can I Get A Witness - Lee Michaels (11/71; #39)
Ain't That Peculiar - Fanny (4/72; #85)

Note: Marvin's biggest hit (I Heard It Through The Grapevine) doesn't count  -  he actually was covering a song Gladys Knight & The Pips had a hit with a year earlier.

Congratulations to Jan H from Moravia, for correctly answering the question and winning a pair of passes to Cinemapolis!
