"Young Girl" - The Union Gap featuring Gary Puckett - 1968
A special request from my friend Brigitte Quinn (VBR alum), who has written a novel and asked me to give it a plug: click here for more info!

"Summer Wind" - Frank Sinatra - 1966
The first day of Fall, 2015, is September 23rd.

"It's Only Make Believe" - Conway Twitty - 1959
#1 on the Hot 100 for 2 weeks, his only pop chart-topper, although he had 40 C&W #1's!

"Laughing" - The Guess Who - 1969
This peaked at Hot 100 #10, while the flip-side, "Undun" charted at #22.

"This Magic Moment" - Jay & The Americans - 1969
Toward the end of their career, this NYC band released cover versions of classic R&B hits; this one originally charted for The Drifters in 1960.

"Atlantis" - Donovan - 1969
Originally released as the flip-side of "To Susan On The West Coast Waiting", this became the bigger hit (Hot 100 #7) while "Susan" peaked at #35.

"Rock & Roll Woman" - Buffalo Springfield - 1967
A nice album track from their second album, Again, off the pen of Steve Stills.

"Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" - Bob Dylan - 1966
From the LP Highway 61 Revisited; also the flip-side of the single "I Want You".

"No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In)" - The T-Bones - 1966

Trivia Question: What is the medication that inspired this instrumental?
Scroll down to the end of the playlist for the answer!

The studio T-Bones were actually The Wrecking Crew (of course) with a nice vibes part from Julius Wechter.  When this became a hit and they needed a band for the road, among the musicians hired were Dan Hamilton, Joe Frank Carollo, and Tommy Reynolds.  They later formed their own pop trio.

"Only The Strong Survive" - Jerry Butler - 1969
Jerry was from Chicago, but really hit his stride when he recorded with Gamble and Huff in Philly in the late 60's; this peaked at Hot 100 #4.

7-8pm

"Run Like Hell" - Pink Floyd - 1980
The Pink Floyd (as they were originally called) have had 5 singles hit the BB Hot 100:

"Money" - 1973 - #13
"Another Brick In The Wall Part II" - 1980 - #1, 4 wks
"Run Like Hell" - 1980 - #53
"Learning To Fly" - 1987 - #70
"Take It Back" - 1994 - #73

Hmmmm... I guess it's not much of a stretch to say that The Floyd were more of an album act, then a singles act!  Lyricist Waters sang lead vocal on both singles from The Wall.  All single versions were edits of their LP versions.

"Mystery Achievement" - The Pretenders - 1980
A rockin' LP track from Pretendrers I.

"Maybe Baby", "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" - 1958, 1959
"Baby" features Buddy's back-up band, The Crickets. "Anymore" (penned by Paul Anka), was his first posthumous release after "The Day The Music Died", 2/3/1959.

"These Arms Of Mine" - Otis Redding - 1963
The first Hot 100 single to chart for Otis, features Steve Cropper on piano, and Otis's boss at the time, Johnny Jenkins, on guitar.

"Toys In The Attic" - Aerosmith - 1975
The title track of this LP features some scintillating guitar licks from birthday boy Joe Perry.

"In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" - Iron Butterfly - 1968
Hope the hard core Butterfly fans weren't too disappointed to hear the 45 edit of this 60's classic!  Yes, we do play some LP version here on Remants, but 17:03 is stretching it just a bit...

"Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)" - Styx - 1978
Tommy Shaw on lead vocals; this peaked at Hot 100 #21.

"Liar" - Three Dog Night - 1971
This song was written by Russ Ballard, and originally recorded by Argent.  However, it was TDN, with Danny Hutton on some far-out vocals, that had the hit.

"Sister Golden Hair" - America - 1975
#1 on The Hot 100 for 1 week in June.  Gerry Beckley, the guy with blonde hair and specs, was the lead singer.

"Love's Theme" - Love Unlimited Orchestra - 1974
Barry White was quite the busy guy in the 70's, with a very successful solo career, the female trio Love Unlimited, and this entity.  This topped the Hot 100 for 1 week in February.  Check out the video with maestro Barry conducting!

"Over And Over" - Dave Clark Five - 1965
The only #1 Hot 100 single for this Tottenham quintet, was a cover of a Bobby Day original (1958, #41).

"Those Were The Days" - Mary Hopkin - 1968
An early signing to Apple Records, she was discovered by Twiggy and produced by Paul McCartney.  Naturally...

"Bernadette" - Four Tops - 1967
Last of the great trio of singles released in '66-'67, and written and produced by Holland-Dozier-Holland (the others were "Reach Out I'll Be There" and "Standing In The Shadows Of Love").  Also features one of the best false endings ever!

"Light My Fire" - Jose Feliciano - 1968

A remnant from our birthday calendar, this cover version hit the Top 10 at #3 almost a year after The Doors took it to #1 for 4 weeks.

"Don't Play That Song (You Lied)" - Aretha Franklin - 1970

Aretha's cover of a Ben E. King original peaked at #11, the same position attained by Ben E. in 1962.

"You've Really Got A Hold On Me" - The Miracles - 1963

But Dad, It's Smokey!  Click here for details.

"California Nights" - Lesley Gore - 1967

Co-written by Marvin Hamlisch, this was Lesley's last Top 40 single, peaking at #16.

A hit for Glen NOT written by Jimmy Webb, this peaked at Hot 100 #23.

"Sorrow" - The McCoys - 1965

The flip-side of their second hit "Fever", this was covered by David Bowie in 1973.

"Let's Live For Today" - The Grass Roots - 1967

The first Top 10 for this California quartet, peaked at Hot 100 #8.  Original member Creed Bratton later turned to acting, portraying "Creed" on the American TV version of The Office.

"Take A Letter Maria" - R.B. Greaves - 1969

The story of the quickest rebound from a divorce, ever, this was the zenith of R.B.'s short career, peaking at Hot 100 #2.

"Serpentine Fire" - Earth, Wind & Fire - 1978

This band produced some of the most damn soulful sounds of the 70's, on both the AM and FM frequencies!  This rocked the Hot 100 in early '78 and peaked at #13.

"Fancy" - Bobbie Gentry - 1970

Bobbie's only other solo Top 40 hit (the other was "Ode To Billie Joe").  She also had Top 40 duet hits with Glen Campbell; "Let It Be Me" and "All I Have To Do Is Dream").

"Devil Woman" - Cliff Richard - 1976

Cliff was a superstar in his homeland, but just had sporadic success here Stateside.  His most prolific period was 1976 - 1980, when he placed half a dozen hits into the Top 40.

"Heart Like A Wheel" - Steve Miller Band - 1981

A little retro rockabilly from the SMB; this peaked at Hot 100 #24.

"Masterpiece" - The Temptations - 1973

Winding down the show this week with the full-length LP version of this song, a Motown Masterpiece from the Temps and producer Norman Whitfield!

Congratulations to Peter from Ithaca, for correctly identifying Alka-Seltzer as the medication that inspired The T-Bones instrumental, and winning a pair of passes to Cinemapolis!
