6-7pm

OPENING THEME:  Good Old Rock ‘n’ Roll – Cat Mother & the All-Night Newsboys (1969, #29, produced by Jimi Hendrix)

Telstar - Tornadoes (#5 this week, headed for a three-week run at #1. This Joe Meek production featuring a bunch of unnamed studio players was the first British group to have a #1 here in the States. Tonight we play a just-released first-time stereo edit.)

Go Away Little Girl - Steve Lawrence (#10 this week, headed to #1 after Telstar finishes its three-week run at the top slot.)

Little Town Flirt - Del Shannon (debuts next week at #97, eventually headed to #5 on the Hot 100.)

Untie Me - The Tams (just off this week, having peaked at #60 Pop, #12 R&B. Composed by guitarist Joe South, whose own career would take off in the late '60s.)

Keep Your Hands Off My Baby - Little Eva (#13 this week, headed to #12.)

You've Really Got a Hold On Me - Miracles (at #79 this week, headed to #8 Pop and #1 R&B. The Beatles would record this and two other songs from this week's chart, yielding ample royalty income for each of the songwriters. In this case, Smokey Robinson was the beneficiary.)

Anna - Arthur Alexander (just off the chart this week, having peaked at #68 Pop and #10 R&B. The Beatles would record this and two other songs from this week's chart, yielding ample royalty income for each of the songwriters. In this case, Mr. Alexander himself was the beneficiary.)

Chains - The Cookies (at #22 this week, headed to #17 Pop and #6 R&B. The Beatles would record this and two other songs from this week's chart, yielding ample royalty income for each of the songwriters. In this case, Carole King & Gerry Goffin were the beneficiaries.)

What Are You Doing New Year's Eve - Orioles (12/49; #9 R&B - maybe the oldest recording I've ever played on the show. Happy holidays!)

Merry Christmas Baby - Otis Redding (recorded in late 1967 and released on Atco Records at about the time his plane went down. The record features Booker T & the M.G.s, the Memphis Horns and Isaac Hayes on piano. The original was recorded by Charles Brown, while Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band would sell a lot of copies in the late '80s, thanks to its inclusion on the b-side of their hit single War.)

* Itchycoo Park - Small Faces (11/67; #16 - featuring the keyboard wizardry of Ian McLagan, who passed away two short weeks ago in Austin, Texas. RIP. Ian is the chap on the far right in the video).

Wear Your Love Like Heaven - Donovan (11/67; #23 - this one would be adapted for a TV commercial to promote the fragrance called "Love" in the late '60s.)

Desafinado - Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd (at #24 this week, headed to #15 on the Hot 100.)

 * Johnny Get Angry – Joanie Sommers (this one had reached #7 in the Summer of 1962. Check out Country Punk singer k.d. Lang's version of this same tune some 30 years later!)

7-8pm

He Will Break Your Heart - Jerry Butler (10/60; #7 Pop, #1 R&B for 7 weeks - his first hit as a solo artist was actually a virtual duet with his former Impressions band mate Curtis Mayfield.)

Let It Be Me - Jerry Butler & Betty Everett (9/64; #5 Pop, #1 R&B for 3 weeks - another stunning duet, this one a cover of the Everly Brothers' beautiful ballad.)

Ain't Wastin' Time No More - Allman Brothers (4/72; #77 - Greg Allman and Dickey Betts both had birthdays this week. This was the first track from the 4-sided Eat a Peach album, completed shortly after Duane Allman's untimely death in a motorcycle accident.)

The Spy - The Doors (1969; an album track from the Morrison Hotel LP)

* Clouds - David Gates (7/73; #47 - his chart debut as a solo artist).  The video is the full-length LP version, a masterpiece of keyboards and orchestra!

Popsicles & Icicles - Murmaids (11/63; #3 for two weeks, written and produced by David Gates)

That's Life - Frank Sinatra (12/66; #4 Pop - with David Melvoin playing the swingin' organ)

I'm Gonna Be Warm This Winter - Connie Francis (12/62; #18 - the b-side of this single was one of a number of Italian songs recorded by the Newark, NJ native. Al Di La would make it to #90 in early January of 1963)

Christmas Will Be Just Another Lonely Day - Brenda Lee (1964, #24 on the Xmas chart)

* Big Girls Don't Cry - 4 Seasons (in its fifth and final week at #1. Tonight you hear the mono single version. This was their second consecutive single to spend five weeks in the top slot.)

Return to Sender - Elvis Presley (in its fifth and final week at #2 - this terrific Elvis single had the misfortune of getting stuck behind the 4 Seasons' juggernaut!)

* The Wanderer - Dion (12/61; #2 - featuring the background vocals of the Del-Satins and the drumming of Panama Francis, this record would be ranked at #239 in Rolling Stone Magazine's "Top 500 of All-Time" list. Tonight we hear an extended edit with a cold ending: a Rockin' Remnants exclusive!.)

Look of Love - Lesley Gore (12/64; #27 - the single version of this record featuring ringing sleighbells, with the intent of capitalizing on the holiday spirit.)

8-9pm

I'll Never Fall in Love Again - Dionne Warwick (12/69; #6 - a classic performance of the Hal David/Burt Bacharach tune, this would be her final Top Ten single for Scepter Records.)

If We Make it Through December - Merle Haggard (11/73; #28 Pop, #1 C&W for four weeks. His highest-charting single on the Pop chart is also something of a Christmas classic.)

* The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down - Joan Baez (8/71; #3 - written by the Band's Robbie Robertson, this surprising hit featuring a big gospel chorus would be her only Top 20 hit.)

Love On the Wrong Side of Town - Southside Johnny & Asbury Jukes (from the 1976 I Don't Want to Go Home  LP and co-written by Bruce Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt. Released as a single on Epic Records but didn't chart.)

Some Guys Have All the Luck - Persuaders (11/73; #39 Pop - Rod Stewart would take this song to #10 in the Fall of 1984)

Everlasting Love - The Love Affair (#1 in the U.K. for this studio group in early 1968, while Robert Knight's version reached #13 here in the States and a cover version by Carl Carlton reached #6 in 1974).

Too Much Heaven - Bee Gees (climbing the chart on this date in '78 and headed to #1 in early 1979 - one of SIX consecutive #1s for the soulful Australian/English brothers!)

Empty Garden (Hey, Hey Johnny) - Elton John (3/82; #13 - John Lennon was tragically gunned down on December 8, 1980. Tonight we play this heartfelt tribute to the fallen Beatle.)

45 Corner: Over the Rainbow - The Echoes (4/57 - released on the Specialty Records label, this Chicago-based group is different from the Italian-American Echoes from NYC. This one never charted and has never been released on CD.)

Shining Star - Manhattans (4/80; #5 Pop, #4 R&B - founding member Edward "Sonny" Bivins passed away just the other day at age 72. We play this one in his memory.)

CLOSING THEME:  Sleepwalk – Santo & Johnny (1959, #1 for two weeks)
