Feature: 1977

Late, late summer of 1977 and the great sounds of the Billboard Hot 100 tonight on Remnants!  This was kind of like my last hurrah as an AM radio listener as I was embarking on a "career" as an FM DJ, and had to learn about bands like The Grateful Dead, Little Feat, Led Zeppelin, ELP and other "album rock" artists of the 60's and 70's.  We'll check out the Birthday Calendar at 7:00 and The Doors are in the 45 corner  Also for summer, a giveaway from Atlas Bowl in T-burg for one hour of free bowling!  Great stuff on a Saturday Night..

6pm – 7pm

I Just Want To Be Your Everything – Andy Gibb – BB Hot 100 #1, 4 weeks

- The chart debut for the youngest Gibb brother; sadly, Andy died very young at age 30 in 1988.

Float On – The Floaters – BB Hot 100 #2

- The only Hot 100 hit for this Detroit soul quartet; parodied by Cheech & Chong as "Bloat On" in 1978.

Best Of My Love – The Emotions – BB Hot 100 #3

- Ascending The Hot 100 to #1 for 5 weeks in the fall of '77.

Strawberry Letter 23 – The Brothers Johnson – BB Hot 100 #7

Smoke From A Distant Fire – Sanford/Townsend Band – BB Hot 100 #9

- This duo was from L.A., but recorded this in Muscle Shoals, AL, with Atlantic chief Gerry Wexler producing.

Easy – The Commodores – BB Hot 100 #17

- This has been updated as a commercial for DirecTV, featuring composer Lionel Richie and Peyton Manning; click here to view!

I Feel Love – Donna Summer – BB Hot 100 #23

Image result for i feel love donna summer 45Image result for i feel love donna summer 12" single

- Gosh, this sounded so unique on the AM radio back 39 years ago, I went out and bought the 12" extended version (8:11) because I wanted more than 5:55 on the 45 version!  Wish I still had it...

Nobody Does It Better – Carly Simon – BB Hot 100 #20

- Theme song from the James Bond flick "The Spy Who Loved Me" starring Roger
Moore.

Way Down – Elvis Presley – BB Hot 100 #21

- The last 45 released while The King was still alive peaked at Hot 100 #18.

Winding up the first hour of Remnants it's 2 listener suggestions, which somehow went together really well!

"Surfin' Bird" - The Trashmen, 1963

"Pyscho Killer" - Talking Heads, 1978

- From the LP Talking Heads '77, this was their first charting single in early '78 and peaked at Hot 100 #92.

7pm - 8pm

September 11th - Tommy Shaw (Styx), 63

September 12th - Barry White, 1944
                                                                George Jones, 1931

September 13th - David Clayton-Thomas
                             (B,S & T), 75
                            Peter Cetera (Chicago), 73

September 16th - B.B. King, 1925

September 17th - Hiram King "Hank"                                          Williams, 1923

"Move It On Over", 1947

"Jambalaya (On The Bayou)", 1952

- One of the most significant and influential singer/songwriters of the 20th century, Hank Williams only lived to age 29, but left behind a lifetime worth of songs, perhaps one of the most covered artists of the past 70 years.  Click here for Hank's bio.

"Paying The Cost To Be The Boss" - B.B. King, 1968

- One of only 5 B.B. singles to reach the Top 40 (of over 35 from 1957-1989), peaking at Hot 100 #39.

"Questions 67 & 68" - Chicago, 1969

"You've Made Me So Very Happy" - Blood, Sweat & Tears, 1969

- The "horn band" sound was big in the late 60's and these 2 bands were a big part of that sound!  Happy birthday to Peter Cetera and David Clayton-Thomas, vocalists of those groups.

"White Lightning" - George Jones, 1959

The highest charting pop single for this Country Music legend peaked at #73... that's it! He did, however, have over 150 songs on the country charts with 13 #1's.

"Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)" - Otis Redding, 1966

"You Never Can Tell" - Chuck Berry, 1964

"Don't Play That Song (You Lied) - Ben E. King, 1962

- A cover version by Aretha Franklin in 1970 peaked at Hot 100 #11, the same chart position as Ben E.

"Tell Mama" - Etta James, 1968

- The power of the Muscle Shoals Swampers mad this Etta's highest-charting Hot 100 single (#23).

"Lonely Blue Boy" - Conway Twitty, 1960

- If Conway (ne Harold Lloyd Jenkins) was an Elvis imitator, then the background singers on this single were Jordanaires imitators!  Great stuff!

45 Corner

"Love Me Two Times" - The Doors, 1968

- I found this nugget while I was pawing through the J-Rchives!  The 45 version (mono) on Elektra Records clocks in at 2:37, 30 seconds less than the stereo LP version and not likely to be available in any format other than this 45.

"It's Just A Matter Of Time" - Brook Benton, 1959

"Baby, It's You" - The Shirelles, 1962

I Wouldn't Want To Be Lie You - Alan Parsons Project - BB Hot 100 #43

- Billboard Magazine had some major gaffes on The Hot 100 chart in the 70's, and this was one of them; listed for it's 13 week chart run as "I Wouldn't Like To Be Like You"!  Who was in charge of that?!?

Blue Bayou - Linda Ronstadt - BB Hot 100 #74

- Linda's version eclipsed the Roy Orbison original (1963, #29) by 23 spots (#6) on The Hot 100 chart.

Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes - Jimmy Buffet - BB Hot 100 #82
