Tonight we highlight just two birthdays: Neil Diamond and Warren Zevon, both born on January 24th.  Neil reached milestone #79, while WZ passed away in September, 2003 at age 56.  Neil was my AM radio hero, while WZ was my FM radio hero : )

The first part of the Neil Diamond birthday retrospective are songs from his BANG Records days, recorded in New York with Jeff Barry producing.

Solitary Man – BB Hot 100 #55, 1966, Neil's first charting single, this was rereleased in 1970 and charted at #21.

Shilo – BB Hot 100 #24, 1970 

Red, Red Wine – BB Hot 100 #62, 1968; the British band UB40 took a cover version of this to #1 in October, 1988.

In 1968, Neil left BANG for a big contract with UNI Records (now Universal Music), his most furtive charting period.  His first Top 40 hit for UNI was...
