Clue 1:  This singer/songwriter and recording industry pioneer was raised in Chicago and scored 43 charting Pop records over a 10-year span.


Clue 2:  Inducted into the R ‘n’ R Hall of Fame in 1986, his compositions have been covered by artists including The Animals, Cat Stevens and Otis Redding.


Clue 3:  He was something of a teen idol on the Gospel Music circuit in the 1950s, and thousands turned out to bid him farewell after his suspicious shooting death at the age of 33 by a Los Angeles motel clerk.

Clue 1:  The lead singer of this band-that-gave-him-top-billing left for a solo career after their first two American hits. He never charted again in the US, but the band’s first single without him went all the way to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Name that band!

Clue 2:  The band appeared in an uncredited movie role, backing up singer Lulu on the title song from “To Sir With Love.” 

Clue 3:  One band member was a prolific songwriter, penning hits for the Hollies, Herman’s Hermits, the Yardbirds and more. He and bandmate Eric Stewart would later form the nucleus of the band called 10cc.
